Investigating the Cytotoxic Redox Mechanism of PFOS within Hep G2 by Hyperspectral Assisted-Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

In this paper, Goines and Dick investigated the mechanism behind perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) cytotoxicity in vitro. PFOS is one of the most toxic per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). HepG2 cells were used to examine the redox mechanisms of the PFOS cytotoxicity. The Axion BioSystems Exact (formerly known as Corning Cell Counter) was used to assess Hep G2 hepatocarcinoma cell concentrations in suspension. Reactive oxygen species – particularly superoxide – were found to play an important role in the mechanism behind PFOS cytotoxicity.
